Official Rules

The 2018 “Unreal Awards: Experience Design” (the “Awards”) recognize the best technical achievements and most innovative projects within the enterprise space (non-videogame projects) using Unreal® Engine 4.  This year’s theme is “Experience Design.” Pursuant to these Official Rules, up to three winners—based on innovation and image quality scoring criteria—will be selected for each of the following categories:

  • Architecture, engineering and construction;
  • Product design;
  • Manufacturing;

By participating, Entrants agree to be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of the judges and/or Epic, which are binding and final on matters relating to this Contest.

How to Enter

Create a video (“Submission”) showing off your Unreal® Engine 4 project. Your submission can be a sequence-based cinematic, but we also require a recorded capture of a run-time experience. We prefer both as that helps us understand the visual fidelity along with any interactive elements. In the case you’re submitting both, please combine the two clips into a single longer clip. Clip length should be no more than 1-2 minutes per clip (or 2-4 minutes if submitting both clips). The Submission must also include a short (5-10 seconds) segment showing your project in the Unreal® Engine 4 Editor while displaying the frame-rate in the Editor. This segment must show a mouse navigating the project in the Unreal® Engine 4 Editor interface in real-time (i.e., no simulated navigation).

Complete a submission form at

The contact details provided in the submission form will not be used until the end of the competition. Judges will see all the submissions as anonymous.

Entrants may submit multiple Submissions in the same or different categories.

Upon Epic’s request, Entrants may be required to submit an executable file.

Submission Period

The Submission Period begins on November 1st, 2018 at 10am EST, and ends on January 20th, 2019 at 11:59pm EST (the “Submission Period”).

All Submissions must be received during the Submission Period.

The Awards are open to participants 16 or older who are authorized users of Unreal® Engine 4 under an Unreal® Engine Studio License Agreement or Unreal® Engine Enterprise License Agreement (“Entrants”).

The Awards are open to participants worldwide, but are void wherever restricted or prohibited by law.

The Awards are sponsored by Epic Games, Inc., located at 620 Crossroads Blvd, Cary, NC 27518 (“Epic”).  Employees, officers, directors, agents, representatives of Epic, the legal, promotion and advertising agencies of any aforementioned entity, and their immediate family members (defined as spouse, mother, father, sisters, brothers, sons, daughters, uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, grandparents and in-laws, regardless of where they live) and those living in their household (whether or not related), and each person or entity connected with the production or administration of the Awards (including judges and sponsors), and each parent company, affiliate, subsidiary, agent and representative of any aforementioned entity are not eligible.

Prior winners of CGarchitect’s Architectural 3Dawards 2018 Unreal Studio Experience Category cannot submit the same project to this award, but they are free to submit different projects.

Submission Guidelines

Submission must not be an obvious extension of one of Epic Games’ official Unreal Engine tutorials.

Submission must demonstrate use of the theme “Experience Design” in an obvious way. This means the project should be capable of being experienced immersively in VR, or with some other immersive display technique. We are looking for interesting combinations of high-fidelity images with immersive interaction and animated elements. The winning project will look both stunning and have some form of interaction that takes it beyond a walkthrough. For each of the three categories, we are looking for the same thing; great visuals and interesting interactive and animated behavior. Submissions must demonstrate a minimum of 30 frames per second on a desktop system with an equivalent of an Nvidia GeForce 1080 graphics board. Submissions must be submitted in QuickTime MOV or MP4 format. The minimum resolution should be Full HD format (1920 x 1080).

If an executable is submitted, Submission must not require additional software to run.

Submission may not include personal attacks on anyone or any discernible product, including competitor products.

Submission may not depict nudity, animal cruelty, or illegal activity or substance, or offensive or obscene subject matter as determined in Epic’s sole discretion.

Submission shall not portray Epic or its affiliates in a negative light.

Submissions must be appropriate for a broad audience.

Submissions should not feature any trademarks (including logos).

Submissions must be original works of authorship, created by the person or company who submits the entry. Entrants may not copy or otherwise plagiarize the Submission from any source, nor may the Submission include third-party copyrighted material or artwork, without the copyright holder’s permission. By entering, you warrant that your Submission does not infringe any third party’s rights, and that you have obtained any necessary permissions from all relevant third parties to submit the Submission. Any images used in the Submission must be an original work of authorship under U.S. Copyright Law.

You hereby agree to indemnify Epic against any and all claims from any third party for any use by Epic of the Submission.

Although Epic is not reviewing Submissions for copyright violations, if, in the sole discretion of Epic, it is believed your Submission constitutes or may constitute copyright infringement, the Submission will be disqualified.

Epic reserves the right to exclude any Submission that it believes, in its sole discretion, doesn't meet this criteria, and to delete any such Submission from any and all location(s) under Epic’s control.

All Submissions will be prescreened to ensure the Submissions have correctly met the Submission Guidelines and meet with Epic’s general standards and practices prior to any judging (“Qualified Submissions”).

Qualified Submissions will be evaluated by designated Epic Games staff who will select the nominees for each category.

All nominees will be reviewed and scored 1-10 (where 1 is the lowest and 10 the highest) by a panel of qualified judges, for each of the following criteria:

  • Innovation (1-10): entry showcases innovation in the project, workflow or customer experience
  • Image quality (1-10): entry showcases high-level of photorealism and/or fidelity

Up to three Submissions—with the highest combined score for Innovation and Image quality—will be selected (“Winning Submissions”) for each of the following categories:

  • Architecture, engineering, and construction;
  • Product design;
  • Manufacturing;

Entrants who submitted a Winning Submission (“Selected Entrants”) will be notified by email on or about Feb 11, 2019 and will be required to respond (as directed) to the notification within seventy-two (72) hours of attempted notification. The failure to respond timely to the notification may result in forfeiture of the Prizes; and, in such case, Epic may choose the next highest scoring Submission from among the remaining eligible Submissions. The Selected Entrant may be sent a declaration of eligibility / liability / publicity release (“Release”). Unless restricted by law, Selected Entrant will be required to complete and return the Release within seventy-two (72) hours of the date Release is sent.  Less than three Winning Submissions may be selected for a category if Submissions do not meet a threshold combined score as determined in the sole discretion of Epic.

As a condition of entry, Entrants hereby provide a non-exclusive irrevocable worldwide license to Epic to use the Submission in any and all media throughout the world for the purpose of promoting the Awards and future versions of the Awards and Epic’s Unreal Engine marketing, but for no other purpose, without any additional compensation, the term of which shall be the entire life of the copyright. Should any Entrant be unwilling or otherwise unable to enter into this license, or provide permissions and or releases, or otherwise cannot accept or receive the prize for any reason, Entrant with the next highest score will be chosen from the remaining Submissions until one who is able to meet all requirements can be selected. Selected Entrants must provide Epic with all signatures on required paperwork and return all documents in a timely manner as required pursuant to these Official Rules in order to be eligible to receive the prize. Entrants may not sell, assign or transfer any of their rights in their Submissions under these Official Rules.

While Epic will seek to post the Submission in the form as provided at the time of entry, all Entrants agree that due to technical limitations, Submissions may be altered from their original form and that Epic reserves the right to modify the Submission in its sole discretion, including adding its logo or other trademarks. Epic may post Submissions in any order or sequence, with or without commentary, and may select an image to serve as a thumbnail in its sole discretion.

Awards are subject to these Official Rules. By participating, Entrants agree: (i) to be bound by these complete Official Rules and the decisions of Epic which shall be final and binding; and (ii) to waive any right to claim ambiguity in the Awards or these Official Rules, except where prohibited by law. By accepting a prize, Selected Entrant agrees to release Epic from any and all liability, loss or damage arising from or in connection with awarding, receipt and/or use or misuse of prize or participation in any prize-related activities. Epic shall not be liable for: (i) telephone system, telephone, or computer hardware, software, or other technical or computer malfunctions, lost connections, disconnections, delays or transmission errors; (ii) data corruption, theft, destruction, unauthorized access to or alteration of entry or other materials; (iii) any injuries, losses or damages of any kind, including death caused by the prize or resulting from acceptance, possession, or use of a prize, or from participation in the Awards; or (iv) any printing, typographical, administrative, or technological errors in any materials associated with the Awards. Epic disclaims any liability for damage to any computer system resulting from participating in, or accessing or downloading information in connection with these Awards. Epic reserves the right to cancel or suspend the Awards, in its sole discretion, should it receive fewer than 10 Submissions or receive no Submissions that have a total score above 5 points, or due to circumstances beyond its control, including natural disasters. Submissions will not be returned and may be destroyed, but are still subject to the license contained herein by Epic. Epic may prohibit an Entrant from participating in the Awards or winning a prize if, in its sole discretion, it determines such Entrant is attempting to undermine the legitimate operation of the Awards by cheating, hacking, deception, or any other unfair playing practices intending to annoy, abuse, threaten, undermine, or harass any other players or Epic representatives. The internal laws of the State of North Carolina will govern disputes regarding these Official Rules and/or this Contest.

Epic is not responsible and shall not be held liable, and your Submission may be disqualified and may not be considered for any Prize, should your Submission be removed from any third-party hosting site for any reason (including without limitation DMCA take-down).

Epic reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel, modify, or suspend the Awards should a virus, bug, computer problem, unauthorized intervention, or other causes beyond Epic’s control, corrupt the administration, security or proper play of the Awards. Use of automated entry devices or programs is prohibited. Any attempts to enter the Awards via a bot script, device, or brute-force attack will result in disqualification, including that IP address becoming ineligible for the entire Awards. Caution: any attempt to deliberately damage or undermine the legitimate operation of the Awards may be in violation of criminal and civil laws and will result in disqualification from participation in the Awards. Should such an attempt be made, Epic reserves the right to seek remedies and damages (including attorneys’ fees) to the fullest extent of the law, including criminal prosecution.

Epic reserves the right to disqualify any Entrant it finds to be tampering with the Submission process or the operation of the Awards or violating these Official Rules. Submissions will not be returned. Epic is not responsible for incomplete, late, lost, delayed, damaged, misdirected, incomplete, void, corrupted, garbled, illegible, or unintelligible submissions and those Submissions are void and will not be accepted; nor is Epic responsible for any problems, bugs, or malfunctions Entrants may encounter when seeking to enter their Submissions. These Awards are subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws.

Epic reserves the right to use the name, likeness, and/or hometown name of any Entrant, for publicity purposes prior to, during, or after the Awards end date, in any media, throughout the world, in perpetuity, but only in connection with publicizing the Awards, without any compensation or prior review unless specifically prohibited by law.

At any time before, during or after the Submission Period, Epic may, in its discretion, choose to post or distribute one or more Submissions, the creator’s name and profile information online (including Facebook pages, Twitter feeds, YouTube channels, and third-party websites) for promotional and entertainment purposes only. Posting of this/these Submission(s) will not mean that said Submissions are eligible to win or are a Winning Submission. Entrants understand that users of these sites may share, comment on (including negatively), and re-post their Submissions. Any requests by Entrants to have a Submission removed from consideration will be accommodated to the extent practically possible. Epic is not responsible for third party reposting of Submissions.

Waiver Of Jury Trial

Except as prohibited by applicable law and as a condition of participating in these Awards, each Entrant hereby irrevocably and perpetually waives any right it may have to a trial by jury in respect of any litigation directly or indirectly arising out of, under or in connection with this contest, any document or agreement entered into in connection herewith, any prize available in connection herewith, and any of the transactions contemplated hereby or thereby.
